Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera found himself in a no-win situation on Sunday.
Many pro teams in all sports have policies and procedures. One of the Panther policies is to wear a tie during travel.
The star of the team, Cam Newton, reportedly travelled to Seattle without a tie.
Rivera did his best to show it is he, and not the players, who is in charge. Rivera benched Newton for the first series of the game.
To some, the move backfired. Back up Derek Anderson started and threw an interception on his first throw of the game. Carolina lost 40-7 and are now 4 and 8 on the season.
Rivera knew the move would have media members asking about the relationship between coach and star quarterback. The press is asking if the relationship is flawed.
Rivera also knew he ran the risk of having his own players questioning the decision to sit a player who makes $20 million per season.
Rivera is under fire, yet does deserve credit: no “one” should be above “team.”
