As much as the Saskatchewan Roughriders covet him, James Franklin may never become their starting quarterback.
Franklin’s current team, the Edmonton Eskimos, are trying to re-sign the promising pivot. TSN’s Gary Lawless reported that the parties are negotiating, but that became obvious last week when Franklin got in touch with former Eskimos quarterback Warren Moon. Franklin was looking for advice. Moon said he would be glad to chat… in private.
The decision will be Franklin’s. Should he accept a new contract from Edmonton, which will likely double or triple his salary, and eventually earn the starting role? Or should he stay in Edmonton for the final year of his low-paying contract, with the knowledge that he may have an NFL opportunity in 2018?
Saskatchewan’s boss, Chris Jones, really, really wants Franklin. Edmonton isn’t going to trade Franklin to Saskatchewan, but it’s ultimately his decision if he wants to be the guy who replaces a franchise quarterback — Mike Reilly in Edmonton or Darian Durant in Saskatchewan.
