A new study says food prices will rise in 2017 and the average Canadian family will spend up to $420 more.
Researchers at Dalhousie University in Halifax expect grocery costs to increase between three and five per cent.
That will make it difficult for organizations already struggling to make the dollars stretch.
“It is doubly difficult because you are already making some choices and compromises between rents and utilities and the cost of food so it is an unwelcome increase to say the least,” explained Steve Compton with the Regina and District Food Bank.
The study suggests Donald Trump’s policies in the U.S. are, in part, a factor because of the possible deportation of illegal, seasonal farm workers.
