The City of Regina is hoping people will ring in the new year with a safe ride home this New Year’s Eve.
The 29th annual Ding in the New Year program will once again be available for people in Regina.
City transit and paratransit will be free from 7 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2016 until 2:15 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2017.
“We know there’s so many tragedies that we’ve heard recently of people drinking and driving throughout the year and there’s just absolutely no reason for that to happen when you have a free service that’s so accessible,” Mayor Michael Fougere said.
MLA Warren Steinley said last year during the holiday season seven people were killed and 33 more were injured in 119 crashes related to drinking and driving in the province.
In 2016, from Jan. 1 until Nov. 30, Regina Police Service have dealt with 511 impaired driving incidents with 793 related charges.
In Regina, there were five impaired driving charges between 6 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2015 and 5:59 p.m. on Jan. 1, 2016. An average of two drivers per day received impaired driving charges between Dec. 24, 2015 and Jan. 1, 2016 within the city.
