Melville couple believe miracle cat is their missing feline

A story worthy of a Disney title card could soon have a happy ending, as a Melville couple looks to reunite with their missing cat.

Brad Slater works for CN Rail, and on Sunday he found a cat in need of help in the frozen engine of a train. Slater took the cat home and has been nursing it back to health.

The story has gone viral, showing on Facebook feeds and newscasts around the world. It caught the attention of Brent and Lynn Hahn in Melville.

Brent said the couple’s cat, Tiger, has been missing since Nov. 26. When a friend sent the story of the cat and the train to his wife, Brent said they knew right away it was their Tiger.

“We compared pictures and yeah, it’s 99.9 per cent our cat.”

According to Brent, Tiger was let out to “do his business” but he never came back in. Brent thinks the cat went roaming around and somehow got onto the train.

“The main line is right beside the highway .. and that particular train, according to the guy that found (Tiger), it stopped right at this particular crossing.”

The couple got in touch with Slater, and now Slater says he’s pretty sure the cat, which he’s dubbed Q199, is actually Tiger.

“We’ll know when they see each other for sure, but the facial markings and everything about him — it’s got to be their cat.”

Slater has grown attached to the cat.

“It’s going to be real tough. Slept with him every night, hang out with him all the time.”

But Brent has a pretty strong attachment as well — Lynn gave him the cat in 2012 to keep him company while he went through cancer treatments.

Lynn is heading to Alberta on Thursday to see the cat and — hopefully for Brent — to bring him home.

“Well, I believed in miracles and this is another one,” said Brent happily.
