The winningest coach in Canadian university football is stepping down.
U of S Huskies head coach Brian Towriss made the announcement Monday at a press conference in Griffiths Stadium.
“I plan to take a well-deserved rest and then see what opportunities or adventures my life presents. Thank you again for all those who have supported me throughout my career – it’s been a great ride,” he said.
Towriss fought back tears as he announced the end of his 33-year tenure as the Huskies’ head coach.
“It’s hard to walk away from your life’s work,” he said.
Towriss won 196 games, more than any other bench boss in Canadian university football.
He guided the Huskies to 11 Hardy Cup trophies for winning their division, along with victories in three of nine appearances in the Vanier Cup finals.
Towriss was known as a stickler when it came to his players’ grades. Over his career, 160 players made the national all-academic team.
Towriss coached 47 players who went on to the CFL.
U of S athletic director Basil Hughton said the team would name an interim replacement in the New Year, and would begin the search immediately for a permanent head coach.
