Success in competitive sport is measured in wins and losses. The “What have you done for me lately?” slogan also comes to the forefront from the time to time. It’s a strategy that makes sense in some ways, and yet numbers don’t always measure integrity and character.
The University of Saskatchewan Huskies football team has lost its last eight playoff games. The 2016 loss was a 30 point defeat at the hands of the University of Calgary Dinos. Those numbers tell a story of a team that may benefit from a new head coach.
Yesterday Brian Towriss read a prepared statement, saying he was stepping down after 33 years as coach of the football team.
During his time there were nine Vanier Cup appearances, three national championships and a U-Sports football record of 196 career wins.
There are no stats for players mentored, people touched and friends made by Brian Towriss in three decades.
Ironically those are the stats that matter most.
