Darrell Davis: Former Riders coach staying at Wisconsin

Paul Chryst is a smart guy. He just said, “No way, LA!”

Only serious Saskatchewan Roughriders fanatics will remember Chryst was a coach with the CFL team. In 1996, Riders head coach Jim Daley hired Chryst as offensive co-ordinator and quarterbacks coach. It was a disastrous season. The Riders averaged a measly 20 points per game, posted a 5-13 record and missed the playoffs, although tailback Robert Mimbs was a CFL all-star.

Chryst absorbed a lot of criticism. He left after one season and resumed his career in the U.S. Amid college jobs at Oregon State and Pittsburgh, he spent one NFL season as the San Diego Chargers’ tight ends coach.

He has since returned to his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin, where he played quarterback. After two seasons as Wisconsin’s head coach he’s being mentioned as a candidate to become the next head coach of the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams. The Rams are a shipwreck. And Chryst, well-versed in that department, said “no way” is he leaving his dream job. Smart guy.
