Southeast Sask. hammered with snow

It’s more than a white Christmas in southeastern Saskatchewan as blizzard and winter storm warnings plagued the area most of the weekend and into Boxing day.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Mark Melsness said on Monday at least 20 cm of snow had fallen in Estevan and even more as you got closer to the Manitoba border.

“We’re expecting conditions to begin improving there late morning or around midday,” he said. “Then slow improvements throughout the afternoon.”

According to Melsness visibility was a concern Monday morning, especially further east.

“Pretty much no travelling in Manitoba, at least for the morning hours because of visibility,” he said.

As the same storm system moved east it forced the closure of Highway 1 between Virden and Winnipeg. Major highways in North Dakota were also closed Monday morning.

Environment Canada says Regina got about 10cm of snow from the tail end of the system.

The weather warnings were lifted around noon Monday.

Snowfall totals at the end of the storm hit around 30 cm, about a foot, in communities near the Manitoba border.
