Even non-MMA fans – otherwise known as normal people – have heard of Ronda Rousey.
Rousey was touted as unbeatable until 13 months ago when she got kicked in the head and lost a title bout to Holly Holm. Since then, Rousey has assumed a low profile, visiting a couple times with Ellen DeGeneres and co-operating for a few magazine articles. Rousey said her disappearance came because she was embarrassed about losing.
Well, guess what. In the UFC world of ultra-hype and big-time promotion, Rousey is making a return to the octagon tonight in Las Vegas. Nunes-Rousey is the main event of UFC 207. And the focus is entirely on Rousey, who has been excused from all pre-bout media responsibilities. UFC boss Dana White promises Rousey will speak to the media after the fight, unless she gets totally incapacitated, which happens from time to time in mixed martial arts.
It’s a riveting story line that will surely attract huge audiences, even without the punches, the kicks, the blood and the brain damage.
