A large swath of Saskatchewan will wake up to frigid temperatures and freezing wind chills Friday.
Environment Canada issued a number of extreme cold warnings Thursday afternoon for areas in the central part of the province – including Saskatoon – and some regions in the southeast.
The warning stated clearing skies associated with an Arctic ridge of high pressure will allow temperatures to plummet to near or below -30 C by mid-morning on Friday.
What’s more – these cold temperatures are predicted to combine with winds up to 20 km/h , generating extreme wind chill values of -40 C or colder.
Conditions are expected to improve late in the morning. The extreme cold warning was cancelled later Friday morning.
Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.
