One trip wasn’t enough to Haiti to help them recover from the devastating 2010 earthquake.
That’s why over 28 health care professionals from Saskatoon are headed Jan. 10 to Jan. 17 to perform medical treatments and education to Haiti Doctors.
“There is a need in Haiti even when an earthquake isn’t happening,” said Plastic Surgeon Dr. Chris Thomson.
Team Broken Earth was started by St John’s, N.L. physicians Dr. Andrew Furey and Dr. Art Rideout after the first Haiti mission in 2010.
“We do it because it’s needed,” Dr. Thomson said. “Haiti is a country that’s had a lot of bad luck and poor governance.”
The team’s last mission was in Mar. 2016 which they completed around forty surgeries during the week in Haiti.
“We all do it because it feels good to know you’re helping people,” Dr. Thomson said.

Monies raised go toward the costs associated with performing acute care and education in Haiti.
“We’ve had great support from the Saskatoon business community,” Dr. Thomson said. “They’ve provided us with bug repellant so we don’t get malaria, but they’ve also supported us financially.”
