Regina to try liquid salt on roads this winter

The City of Regina is making another attempt to try liquid salt this winter.

Last year’s mild weather didn’t produce enough snow or ice to test the product used by other major centres in Canada. 

“We’ve been getting the weather that we need to get that information for the analysis so we are hopeful we can get that information very soon here,” explained Chris Warren, manager of winter maintenance.

But there is a lot to determine before the City decides whether this will be useful for Regina’s roads.

“How much material are we using compared to our old method, how quickly the pavement turns back to bare, dry pavement, how long the material stays in place, things like that,” Warren explained.

“We also need to be able to determine the various concentrations that are going to be needed with the liquid salt and also how quickly do we need to get the snow off the road for that salt to remain effective.”

Liquid salt is said to be more effective than the traditional salt and sand mix.
