Waskimo returns to Regina for the first time since 2003

After more than a decade away, Waskimo is back this winter.

The annual festival of winter activities returns east of the Broad Street bridge on February’s family day.

“We’re a winter city and I think we need to embrace that fact,” explained Jim Aho, who is part of the committee behind Waskimo’s return. “It’s colourful, it’s fun, people bring their dogs and dress them up, they bring their toboggans and sleds and everyone just comes out to observe and take part in the outdoor activities.”

Waskimo was last held in 2003, but with the Big Dig that followed and the aeration that occurred to Wascana Lake, people couldn’t skate on the lake.

By moving the event outdoor enthusiasts can get back on the water.

“Out on the lake, and this is the magic of Waskimo, you actually get out onto Wascana Lake and that is rare for people right,” Aho said.

There will be plenty to do at Waskimo. The outdoors will feature snow-shoeing, cross-country skiing, skating and the return of the famous outhouse races.

Conexus Arts Centre will be an indoor hub for kids and a respite from the cold with storybook characters and superheroes wondering around along with face painting and an arts room.

“It puts a smile on people’s face right away, as soon as you say Waskimo, their eyes light up and they ask, are you bringing it back? Seriously!”
