Most students at the U of S will see their tuition rise in the 2017-18 school year.
The school released its planned tuition rates for the upcoming year on Wednesday.
Fee increases were approved by the school’s board in December. Overall, the hikes vary by program between zero and five per cent. The average tuition increase across all programs works out to 2.3 per cent.
About half of U of S students are enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences. Those students will see their fees rise by an average of 2.5 per cent, leaving the typical student paying $6,102 in tuition.
John Rigby, interim associate provost of institutional planning and assessment, explained the school has to raise rates in order to ensure quality doesn’t deteriorate.
Rigby said this was the consideration behind one of the largest increases of five per cent in the school’s nutrition program.
On the other hand, Rigby said the U of S is sensitive to prices charged by other schools. He added this was largely behind the decision to hold tuition for the engineering program steady for the second year in a row.
Rigby said U of S fees compare favourably with the rest of the country’s major research universities.
“Excepting dentistry, which is a little above the median, we are at or below that midpoint of tuition ranges,” he said.
The U of S gets about 25 per cent of its money from tuition fees.
