Bedford Road Collegiate High School’s Invitational Basketball Tournament (BRIT) isn’t just about the sport.
The entire student body gets involved, including art students who help create rows and rows of team murals that plaster the gymnasium walls.
“Every year a new work of art is created,” said art student Victoria Sommerfeldt. “The teams look forward to seeing how we represented their team in the mural we paint them.”
Art students spend anywhere from 20 to 100 hours getting the murals ready for the big tournament that starts Thursday.
“Some kids go all out with the fine details of shading,” said Art teacher Richelle Orth. “It’s impressive to see how much work goes into these pieces.”
Sommerfeldt said it’s a huge honour to showcase their masterpieces.
“To show it to the rest of the school and community is really rewarding,” she said.
The pieces are just over three-and-a-half metres tall and three-and-a-half metres wide. Local Saskatoon teams provide their own murals for display, Bedford art students make the murals for out-of-town teams.
