Saskatchewan drivers faced terrible highway conditions due to extreme blowing snow Wednesday evening.
After most of the province had been placed under a blowing snow advisory, RCMP asked drivers to avoid travel in Saskatoon, Blaine Lake, Shellbrook, Big River, Canwood and Prince Albert.
A release from RCMP reads “the high winds are creating blowing snow and whiteout conditions along with finger drifts across the highways.”
That was certainly the case for Michelle Linklater as she drove on Highway 7 toward Saskatoon to pick her daughter up from dance class.
“It’s amazing to see how many people are on the roads and when you come up to them you can’t see them,” she told 650 CKOM.
Linklater described the conditions as in the top ten worst she had ever experienced as a driver.
“The roads don’t seem slippery,” she said. “There’s just zero visibility.”
Environment Canada Meteorologist Justin Share expected the blowing snow to improve within hours.
“The visibility will begin improving overnight and into the early morning,” Share said. “On Thursday morning people will start dealing with extreme windchill values.”
