Sask. Government highlighting snowmobile safety this week

This week marks the provincial snowmobile safety week.

By law, if you were born after Jan. 1, 1989 you have to have your snowmobile safety certificate or you could face a hefty fine, and lose your insurance coverage.

The government is hoping that by shining a light on the importance of safety this week, it will spark a conversation with fellow snowmobilers and their family and friends.

David Heier is the President of the Estevan snowmobile club and said one of the most important things to remember when you ride is the right outfit.

“Wearing the proper gear is crucial,” said Heier. “Another would be not to drink and drive, and to pay attention to your speed, sometimes even guys like myself can go a little faster, but you have to remember to slow down.”

Heier added that with the recent snowfall southern Saskatchewan has been quite busy tending to the trails. He says his crew, of about five men, have been grooming the trails around the clock.

“Never thought id have to complain about the amount of snow, but it’s good as it keeps up busy,” said Heier.

Northern Saskatchewan hasn’t been as lucky as some trails are closed due to the lack of snow.
