Kevin Glenn is back in Saskatchewan for a third go-round as a Roughriders quarterback, 15 years after making his CFL debut in green and white.
It doesn’t solidify anything for the future, but it’s a logical signing. The Riders don’t have a proven quarterback, so Glenn gives them an insurance policy, a 37-year-old, reliable-but-turnover-prone veteran who has never won a Grey Cup. And if none of their younger quarterbacks step forward, Glenn can start their first game at Mosaic Stadium and carry on until somebody else takes the reins.
That somebody most likely is going to be Edmonton Eskimos backup James Franklin. The Roughriders covet Franklin, who showed his potential under Riders boss Chris Jones when they were together in Edmonton. Franklin has one year remaining on his Eskimos contract and, so far, is refusing to sign an extension. When Franklin becomes a free agent after the 2017 season, there’s little doubt he will be joining the Roughriders, who hope to survive the upcoming season with an unsettled quarterback position.
