It was a little over two years ago when Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray fired coach Paul MacLean.
At that time, Murray did his best to give fans an idea of what NHL athletes want in a coach. Murray said players want to be “taught, not confronted.”
Murray did a good job in pointing out a reality in pro sports. When dealing with athletes, that in some cases earn more money than coaches, bench bosses have to run teams on players’ terms.
Last night, after a 5-1 loss to Montreal, Flames coach Glen Gulutzan called his team’s effort “pathetic.”
As a matter of fact, he used the word “pathetic” on several occasions when meeting the media after the game.
Gulutzan deserves credit for being honest with Calgary hockey fans about what he saw Tuesday night. However, he’ll only be able to voice that opinion every so often no matter how the Flames perform.
That’s an NHL reality.
