More adult players are now investing in the protective equipment.
The Weyburn Special Olympics floor hockey team is gearing up for a tournament next month, and Wednesday night, had an old friend come out to help with the practice. Brett Jones popped by, and took part in a scrimmage with the team.
Jones, who plays for the New York Giants in the NFL, greeted the players, and had a smile on his face the whole time as he got to catch up with some old friends at the practice.
“A lot of these guys and girls I got to go to school with, so it’s great just to see them again, and do some of the stuff we used to do in high school.”
After spending much of his time on the gridiron, Jones was pretty quick to get back into the rhythm of things with a hockey stick in hand. He did have one admission, though.
“I’m not as good on the floor as I would be on the field, but it was definitely a lot of fun, and I enjoyed it, and I think they did too,” Jones said after the practice.
Jones was joined by former University of Regina Ram Nathan Cugnet, along with his father Rob, and the coaches of the team in the scrimmage. Afterwards, he presented each athlete with a Giants Pride towel and took time to sign them, and a number of other items.
The team, named the Weyburn Dragons, will be hosting a tournament on Feb. 11 at Weyburn Comprehensive School.
