Plows busy clearing Regina streets after snowfall

Plows, graders and ice control were all out on Regina roads trying to make the snowy drive a little easier on Monday.

A systematic plow of category 1-4 streets began at 7 a.m., according to the city’s manager of winter maintenance Chris Warren. Main roads and some side streets got attention as the snow is expected to fall throughout the day, finally stopping sometime Monday night after snowing all day Sunday.

“There is a little bit more in the forecast but we wanted to get a good start on the plow just to get out there and start making those streets good for winter driving,” Warren said.

As per usual, the most frequently driven routes were given priority.

“On Ring Road, it’s continuous. We’ve got a dedicated truck on Ring Road,” Warren explained.

“What they would do is they would continuously cycle and of course they got the big front plow and the side wing so they’re capable of plowing up to two lanes at once.”

In addition to plowing, he outlined how ice control trucks patrolled high speed roads like Ring Road and Lewvan. Graders were out cycling through those same sort of perimeter roads, along with routes susceptible to blowing and drifting snow.

Warren said occasionally trucks working in different areas will team up in a group of four or five to cover main streets in one pass. He said the main focus is keeping roads passable throughout the snowfall. He added that, if needed, crews can go back and redo roads that need it.
