The NFL does so many things right that the CFL still doesn’t get.
Kyle Shanahan is going to be introduced as the new head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.
Shanahan has been the Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator for the last two seasons. We have known the 49ers were courting Shanahan because the team confirmed it when asked.
The same story happened two years ago with the Falcons courting Dan Quinn, who at the time was the Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator. Quinn would be named days after Seattle lost the Super Bowl.
These two teams coaching searches were followed, reported on and the team wasn’t worried to admit who was being interviewed. Why? Because being open about the process only gets more press. More press means better fan engagement and on and on it goes.
The Toronto Argonauts GM search and head coach search seems to be a state secret. Why?
If the Argos did interview Marc Trestman – or anybody for that matter – get it out there. A story gets printed. It gets in the news. The story grows. The more stories in the press. That’s fantastic.
It’s not like the Argos don’t need the publicity.
