A blast of winter leaves Saskatoon with a fresh layer of snow, rest of Sask. with icy roads

People in the Saskatoon area woke up Saturday morning to a bit more snow than expected.

According to Environment Canada between four and five centimetres, around two inches, fell overnight.

Meteorologist Bryan Van Wilgenburg told 650 CKOM Saturday that it was part of a convective system.

“You can easily pick up four or five centimetres, but if you’re just outside the system you see no snow at all.” he said.

Van Wilgeburg expected the snowfall would be over by Saturday afternoon.

The snowfall was enough to make road conditions treacherous with both The City of Saskatoon and The Highway Hotline reporting slippery conditions and reduced visibility.

In Saskatoon, drivers were reminded to be cautious in a media release from the city.

Roadways crews were out early clearing priority streets starting with Circle Drive and freeways.

HIGHWAYS ACROSS THE PROVINCE IMPACTED BY WINTER WEATHER

While snow didn’t fall everywhere in Saskatchewan the Highway Hotline was reporting winter conditions for most of the province.

An update sent around 8 a.m. showed slippery roads, fog, loose snow, frost and poor visibility from starting near La Ronge and covering roads as far South as Swift Current.
