Jamie Nye: Bad plays are made worse by bad excuses

Gustav Nyquist should be made an example of.

Not for his heinous high stick on Jared Spurgeon last night, but for his completely bogus excuse for doing so.

Nyquist, the Detroit Red Wings forward, drove the blade of his stick into the left cheek of Spurgeon. Sadly the refs missed it and gave him a simple two minute minor.

Nyquist won’t be so lucky after the NHL Department of Player Safety weighs in. A big suspension should be coming but let’s add a few more games for players who won’t own up to their stupidity.

Call it in the Dennis Wideman rule. You remember the defenseman of Calgary who cross checked the ref and later said he didn’t see the linesman.

Nyquist offered a similar pathetic excuse, though anything short of admitting to his stupidity would have been insufficient.

So let’s add a game or two to his upcoming suspension for lack of remorse.
