This year’s property tax increase will be determined at Monday night’s city council meeting.
In January, the administration proposed a 4.18 per cent increase to the mill rate and a five per cent jump to water bills.
But ahead of the meeting, Mayor Michael Fougere hinted he would consider changing those numbers.
“I’m hoping we’ll adjust the mill rate accordingly to reflect what we have heard from the public, we have had lots of input by people who are concerned about the utility rate and taxes generally,” he said.
The proposed utility rates sees an increase not just in 2017 but another five percent proposed in 2018.
“There’s work to be done on the utility rate, no question about that. What I do want to see is a review of the long-term rates over time: are they sustainable and are they the right rates?”
It is expected to be a long and robust debate with a number of delegations already registered to present their arguments to council.
The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at city hall.
