As I read my friend’s obituary in Saturday’s newspaper — after absorbing the gut shot that he had died — I marvelled at everything Vic Dietz had accomplished in the legal profession.
Vic was a good athlete when we met during our high school days. We were good buddies who drifted apart, typically, because of families and careers. Vic certainly made good use of his law degree from the University of Saskatchewan.
When Vic and his partner, Sandy, another friend of mine, moved into our neighborhood a few years ago it was wonderful to catch up and visit. They lived just around the corner, so Vic and Sandy would often see our kids en route to school. We’d all say hi, chat, laugh a lot and pet Vic’s dog.
Our visits waned. But Vic and I would occasionally cross paths and talk about getting together for another game of golf. We never did. And that’s a lesson to remember: whenever you have an opportunity to play a round of golf, take it, especially if you get to play with someone like Vic Dietz.
