There are people fighting to keep Saskatoon from becoming Canada’s most outdated city.
Saskatoon Tourism President and CEO Todd Brandt went to Edmonton last week with members of the SaskTel Centre board of directors to tour the new Rogers Place arena.
It was a wise move to go on such a fact-finding mission. SaskTel Centre has generated millions in revenue as Saskatchewan’s largest indoor venue for concerts and sporting events. But the facility is now 30 years old.
A downtown project which including retail space, a convention centre, office space and an 18,000-seat facility for concerts and sports would be an economic driver.
Saskatoon’s history isn’t the greatest when it comes to mega-projects. SaskTel Centre, The Dakota Dunes Casino (25 miles out of the city) and the Remai Modern Art Gallery all serve as reminders of how the Bridge City has struggled.
A long, drawn-out debate about whether to renovate, re-build, or keep the status quo is on the horizon. Here’s hoping small town thinking doesn’t prevail in the province’s largest city.
