Wray Morrison: Skill saw

NHL regular season hockey is on my television set nearly seven nights a week.

Long gone are the days of waiting for Saturday to have National Hockey League games come into my home.
 
As a result, some of the novelty of regular season play is gone. Despite this, I set aside some time to watch Tuesday night’s game between Toronto and Winnipeg. I was glad I did.
 
The NHL’s top rookies – Patrick Laine of the Jets and Auston Matthews of the Leafs – put on a terrific show in a nine-goal hockey game that went in to overtime. Matthews set up three goals, while Laine scored twice in a back-and-forth contest.

The league’s up-and-comers, Connor McDavid included, give Canadian teams a level of skill that hasn’t been seen in some time.
 
For those who say the NHL game has turned too defensive – and as a result, too boring – this game was one of many this season that prove them wrong.
