Gord Currie is in the Order of Canada. The Canadian Football Hall of Fame. The Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame.
He should be enshrined in every institution that honours character, compassion and accomplishment.
There weren’t many men better than Gord Currie, who died this week at age 93. He was an educator and the principal of Regina’s Campbell Collegiate before a short stint as a Saskatchewan MLA in Grant Devine’s government, where he was education minister before being bumped from cabinet. The joke: Currie was too honourable a gentleman to serve in that cabinet.
Currie coached baseball, hockey and football. Most notably he coached the Regina Rams, who won six Canadian junior football championships under his guidance.
Currie’s sense of sportsmanship and humility were so profound, even the archrival Saskatoon Hilltops respected him. His influence remains in the students he taught and the athletes he coached, who carry on his legacy as doctors, lawyers, firefighters, police officers, educators, coaches and pillars of their communities.
