One of the hardest things to be is gracious in defeat as well as humble in victory.
Those are two life lessons we attempt to pass on to our youth and these lessons are often learned in sport, where winners and losers are plenty.
And, yes, even at the best of times we fail to be gracious or humble. It happens and, sometimes, we are able to forgive someone for not being able to find the right mindset in an extreme circumstance.
However, Jordan Horowitz can be the example of being gracious in defeat for all eternity. Horowitz is one of the producers for La La Land and what happened at the Oscars was bewildering. La La Land announced as the winner of Best Picture. Producers, actors, directors, songwriters, pile on stage, speeches given and … yeah, about that, you lost.
But it was Horowitz in the confusion who took the lead to make sure Moonlight was named the winner of Best Picture. Host Jimmy Kimmel tried to make a joke about Horowitz still holding the Oscar but he brushed it off saying it would be a pleasure to hand the trophy to the rightful winners.
Instead of mocking Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway or some poor stage hand, I’ll choose to remember the gracious Jordan Horowitz.
