It gives another meaning to gunfire.
Using an incinerator on Friday, Regina police destroyed more than 150 guns collected through an amnesty program that ran for two weeks earlier this month.
Regina police collected 157 guns from Feb. 1-15, dropped off by people who didn’t want them anymore.
Those who dropped off a gun were offered their choice of a month-long bus pass or month-long pass to the city’s leisure centres in exchange.
Under the terms of the amnesty, people who dropped off weapons faced no charges for unauthorized possession or licensing.
Not all of the 157 guns given over were destroyed.
According to police, three unique or historically valuable guns were sent to an RCMP museum in Ottawa; one was an antique and will be submitted to a museum in Saskatchewan.
A fifth gun was identified as being stolen in a rural break-and-enter. It cannot be returned to its owner because it was sawed-off. That gun will be destroyed once police complete an investigation.
