You can criticize the Toronto Argonauts about their timing. But it’s hard to criticize them for their choices of general manager and head coach.
Jim Popp has been one of the top personnel men in the Canadian Football League for decades. His connections through the United States rival anybody else in the CFL and continued to bring great talent to the CFL.
He also hires good people to run the Canadian aspect of the ratio and was still one of the only people to deploy an all-Canadian offensive line, which is unheard of now.
The last few years in Montreal hasn’t gone too well but that had as much to do with a lack of a quarterback than anything, although that does lie at the feet of Popp.
Marc Trestman comes back to the league after a failed trip to the NFL through Chicago and Baltimore. But can he reclaim his glory on the sideline without Anthony Calvillo?
Either way, Toronto has brought it proven experience with Grey Cup rings to boot.
This may be a bigger win for 2018 than it will be for 2017. But Toronto should take all the wins they can get.
