It was a busy day on the first day back of the spring session.
Don McMorris made a return to the government caucus. He had stepped away from the caucus, and as his roles as a cabinet minister and deputy premier, following a DUI conviction last summer.
The Saskatchewan Party caucus voted in favour at its scheduled Monday morning meeting.
McMorris had previously said he would return only when the caucus asked him to, but he made the request in writing to the government caucus chair.
After 18 years of political experience, McMorris was told he had more to offer.
“Constituents think I have some experience, I think I have some experience that can be beneficial,” McMorris said.
“If my experience can help this government through these challenging times I am glad to be able to offer that.”
He now has an interlock device in his car, and it is that lifestyle change, plus the experience of being convicted, that has led him to have some new ideas as the government continues to strengthen drunk driving laws in Saskatchewan.
“These aren’t party policies, these are things that I will push from inside government and inside caucus that I think I can maybe do a better job inside than pushing from the outside,” McMorris maintained.
New face
MLA Ryan Meili was sworn-in during the initial proceedings at the legislature.
He won for the NDP in the recent Saskatoon Meewasin byelection.
Meili is seen as a top contender for the party leadership.
He ran twice before receiving just under half of the vote.
