Regina man to be charged after stealing vehicle, evading police

A Regina man will be charged after stealing a vehicle from a house and evading police on Monday.

At around 5 a.m. on March 6, police were dispatched to a house on Leopold Crescent for a report of a break and enter in progress.

The homeowners had called 9-1-1 and said their house had been broken into by someone who broke a window on the back door. The suspect grabbed a set of car keys and other items from their house.

The homeowners watched as the suspect took their car, a white Acura MDX.

An initial investigation pointed towards the suspect being known to the victims.

Different officers had spotted the vehicle a few times in the city driving at high speeds. At one point, police had pulled up behind the Acura at a red light, exited their car and approached the suspect vehicle but it accelerated through the red light and fled.

The Acura was last seen leaving Regina on Highway 11 northbound, traveling an estimated 120 kilometers per hour.

Regina police notified other police agencies of the circumstances and shared the vehicle information.

Later that day, Regina police were notified the suspect had been arrested around 1:15 p.m. by RCMP near Meadow Lake.

The vehicle was recovered.

The 29-year-old suspect will return to Regina on Friday to face charges of breaking and entering, committing theft, possession of stolen property and dangerous driving.

An investigation into the matter is ongoing.
