Quarterback Vince Young signs 1-year contract with Roughriders

A day after arriving in Regina, Vince Young signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

It was rumoured Wednesday he and his agent were on their way to the Queen City to finalize a deal with the green and white. 

Head coach Chris Jones, quarterback coach Jarious Jackson and offensive coordinator Stephen McAdoo travelled to Texas to meet with him and were impressed. 

“I know how hard he works,” said Jones on Thursday. “I’ve been around and I’ve talked to a lot of people that know Vince and I know the work habits that he has are going to allow him to be successful.”

Young retired from the NFL in 2014 but said he always wanted to play football again.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a comeback — I’d just say it’s an opportunity because the fact is, you know, I love the game of football and it’s kind of hard to sit on the couch and not be able to be out there playing,” he said.

Young was not named as a starter. He said he’s just here to compete. 

“Like I’m going to tell my teammates, it’s not all about Vince. I don’t want them to think that I’m coming here big-headed and things like that. It’s all about the team, it’s all about the city.”

Young was picked third overall by the Tennessee Titans in the 2006 NFL draft.

After five years, he went on to join the Philadelphia Eagles for one year, then played with Buffalo Bills, Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns.
