The $1.33M rent reduction comes from what the club owed during seasons impacted by the pandemic.
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) wants to see more tough decisions made by the provincial government as it works to pay off the deficit.
The lobby group is praising the decision to reduce MLAs and staff wages by 3.5 per cent. That target is also being applied to public sector contracts.
“The reality is we don’t have as much money and when we don’t have as much money we can’t spend as much money,” argued Todd McKay, prairie director of the CTF. “It is a pretty simple, straightforward fact.”
McKay maintained as the province works to reduce the $1.2 billion deficit, it will need to keep making tough decisions.
“It’s not fun, but it’s not going to get easier if we wait, we’ve procrastinated on deficits before in this province and it hasn’t turned out well, so we’ve got to take concrete action on that front,” McKay said.
The government has announced a 10 per cent reduction in caucus grants.
The NDP is calling for even further measures, including a 20 per cent reduction in allowances and bonuses provided to cabinet ministers.
