Persephone Theatre 2017-18 season features bonus shows, 'Pride and Prejudice'

Saskatoon’s Persephone Theatre will boast an expanded lineup of shows for its 2017-18 season.

The company announced Monday there will be two bonus productions for the main stage, along with a return of its three-show Deep End programming.

The additional shows will complement the regular season, starting this August with Rick Miller’s one-man show BOOM, documenting the music, culture and politics of the Baby Boom generation.

Then in February 2018, Persephone will host the world premiere of Gabriel Dumont’s Wild West Show, co-presented with Gordon Tootoosis Nīkānīwin Theatre and La Troupe du Jour.

Persephone’s Main Stage season will open with Art, a witty incisive dialogue about modern art and friendship.

Next up is the world premiere of Quick Bright Things, a touching, hilarious and authentic look at family and mental illness.

For the holidays, Persephone is offering up Treasure Island, an adaptation of the Robert Lois Stevenson novel.

Rounding out the regular season is thriller Butcher; romantic musical Onegin and a lavish grand finale production of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

The new season also marks the return of the Deep End with three current, cutting and compassionate theatre experiences:

• Fish Eyes – two dance plays by celebrated TV, film and theatre actor Anita Majumdar exploring teen angst and honoring cultural heritage.
• The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui by Bertold Brecht – three staged readings parodying the series of events by which Hitler was allowed to come to power and is Persephone’s response to a recent election south of the border.
•  Home Is a Beautiful Word – Joel Bernbaum’s documentary play about homelessness presented in association with Sum Theatre and the Broadway Theatre.
