It’s that time of year again when the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament takes over your television and an office bracket pool.
And it’s also that time of year when fans of university sport in our country try to paint those as un-Canadian because they pay more attention to U.S. college basketball than Canadian college basketball.
First, don’t blame us for lack of exposure. Blame U Sports who cut a terrible broadcasting deal with Sportsnet. You don’t see regular season games. Only playoff games and even then those championship games are buried on Sportsnet 360, which is unavailable to many TV subscribers.
Second, there is the fact the tournament is filled with future NBA players and the best Canadians are playing in the tournament, and third: gambling. Ah yes, gambling. It’s amazing when you can put money down on something how interest rises.
I’d love to see the University game get more exposure in Canada but those who run U Sports are as much to blame as anyone.
