SGI files lawsuit against teen who caused deadly Regina crash

SGI has filed a lawsuit against an 18-year-old man who caused a deadly crash on Regina’s Ring Road.

The defendant was 16 at the time of the incident and cannot be named since he is protected by the Youth Criminal Justice Act. His matters related to the March 2015 incident are still before the court.

The Crown corporation covered the cost for things such as the value of the victim’s vehicle, towing and storage and the replacement of child car seats. It is looking to recoup the $4,717.98 it paid out.

The statement of claim also suggested the Warraich estate, along with four others involved in the crash, could seek action against the defendant “to recover non-economic loss arising out of or stemming from bodily injury and/or death caused by the collision.” The amount of such payments have not been determined.

In February, a judge found the accused guilty of dangerous driving causing death and two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm. The teen was acquitted on three charges of criminal negligence, one count of criminal negligence causing death and two counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

The collision near the McDonald Street exit killed 49-year-old Saeed Warraich, a father of twin boys.

The judge concluded the youth pulled the keys from his ignition while travelling at highway speeds. His vehicle lost control, crossed into oncoming traffic, and hit Warraich’s vehicle.

The youth will be sentenced at a later date.
