Every year when the Canadian Football Hall of Fame names its inductees, there’s an outcry in Saskatchewan about the people who have been left out.
This year’s class includes Brian Towriss, the recently retired head coach of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, and Geroy Simon, the CFL’s all-time receiving leader who ended his 15-year career with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Anthony Calvillo, Kelvin Anderson and Stan Schwartz round out the class.
Towriss admitted he was surprised to be inducted immediately following his so-called retirement. His quick enshrinement may surprise some fans who think University of Regina Rams head coach Frank McCrystal should have beaten Towriss into the hall. Former Riders Kent Austin, Al Ford, Glen Suitor and Wayne Shaw also have vocal proponents for their induction. All are worthy of consideration, but there’s only so much room every year.
