Dozens gathered outside Royal University Hospital on Saturday to protest a shortage of midwives in the Province.
Saskatchewan currently employs just 15 midwives. By comparison, Alberta has 80.
“The strain on the OBs (Obstetrician) is astronomical in our province,” said protest organizer Amanda Harder.
“It actually saves about $2000 per birth, that would really help with our 685 million deficit,” Harder said.
A midwife provides care for you during your pregnancy, assists you to deliver your baby, and cares for both you and your baby for six weeks after the baby is born. A midwife can order tests and procedures as well as consult with other health professionals as needed.

Organizers say 50% of women in Saskatoon who request a midwife, are turned down.
“I really like the model of care,” said Janeen Loehr, who had her son’s three-year-old Simon and nine-month-old Arthur by a midwife.
“They give you a lot of information about birth and I like a lot of information about everything.”
The government said it’s been difficult for them to recruit midwives and keep them in the province.
“Our government proclaimed the legislation and started having midwives in the province,” said a Sask. Party spokesperson.
“Previously we didn’t have them in any health regions.”
