Severe flooding over the weekend is leaving the Rainbow Youth Centre with an unexpected, costly cleanup bill.
“There’s about a foot of water in the basement, which is about 5,000 square feet, so a lot of water,” said executive director Shelly Christian.
She said the basement has a gym floor used by kids and teens for basketball, a computer area and a kitchen which houses a number of appliances. Christian said some programs will have to be cancelled for now unless they can be moved if an alternative space is found.
“The Rainbow Youth Centre is offering great programming to youth and we’d like to continue to do so, however, until we get this mess cleaned up we are at a little bit of a standstill.”
She isn’t totally sure what caused all the water to accumulate, but figures it had something to do with a sewer backup, which their insurance doesn’t cover.
“We’ve had a couple of crews out here helping us do a bit of cleanup but the bill is going to cost us, just for the cleanup alone, is going to be a pretty high bill and then we’ll have to look at replacing all of the items that were on the basement level floor,” Christian explained.
A GoFund Me page has been set up to raise money for costs of cleanup, restoration and a new sewer line with a goal of $150,000.
