More adult players are now investing in the protective equipment.
Lighthouse Supported Living Inc. and The Saskatoon Indian and Metis Friendship Centre will get funding for much-needed renovations and facility updates.
The Saskatoon Housing Initiatives Partnership (SHIP) and the Community Advisory Board on Saskatoon Homelessness (CAB-SH) announced a total of $74,271 in funding for the organizations Friday.
The Friendship Centre will get $34,268 towards bathroom renovations, lighting, emergency exits and the kitchen area.
The money will also be used to install new window, flooring and security cameras.
In a news release interim Executive Director, May Henderson said the renovations will enhance security, safety, and help with building maintenance.
“There is a high need for safe, secure, clean, understanding and compassionate places for individuals experiencing homelessness or those at risk to call their home away from home,” she said.
Lighthouse in Saskatoon will receive two different grants.
$35,789 toward two low-barrier suites for clients who struggle with alcohol and $4,214 in partnership with the city to upgrade lighting around the supported living tower downtown.
Lighthouse Executive Director Don Windels hopes it will help make a difference for people who rely on the shelter.
“So many of the individuals who frequent our shelter need supported housing, but there just are not enough units available that welcome people who have some barriers,” he said in a news release.
The funding is part of nearly $7-million expected to be invested in Saskatoon from 2014-2019 as part of the federal government’s Homelessness Partnering Strategy.
