The University of Saskatchewan College of Dentistry went all Oprah Winfrey on dental care for those who can’t afford it on Saturday.
“It was a great help because I just got laid off a few months ago,” Nate Reeb said.
“Once my EI ran out I had no coverage on anything and my teeth started to cause me problems.”
It was the first ever Dental Day YXE, where 200 patients got to take advantage of free cleanings, fillings, and even root canals.
“Usually this would be pretty expensive,” Rebecca Newson said.
“Unfortunately as a student I don’t have extra money to spend on dental care, so this was a really nice gesture to help me out.”
The new free care day is part of the College of Dentistry’s vision to provide outreach and community engagement.
“Lots of people are so thankful,” Dr. Alyssa Hayes said, who was one of the organizers of the event.
“It’s so great to see so many nice smiles. When you get into dentistry you want to help people.”
Over 20 sponsors and dental care providers helped out with supplies and financial support for the event.
