A GoFundMe page to help a nurse pay a hefty fine was briefly shut down Wednesday afternoon.
The online campaign was created by Montreal nurse Natalie Doucet to support Carloyn Strom, who was fined $26,000 for speaking out about her grandfather’s end-of-life care at a facility in Macklin, Sask. in 2015.
On Wednesday, Strom’s lawyer Marcus Davies told 650 CKOM someone reported the fundraiser to GoFundMe, saying the money was supporting “illegal activity.”
He said the website suspended the account “pending investigation.”
The page was down for at least one hour, but was re-activated shortly after 650 CKOM asked GoFundMe about the situation.
When asked why the fundraiser had been suspended, GoFundMe’s Bobby Whitmore said campaigns are “periodically reviewed by our team to ensure they comply with our terms of service.”
As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, the campaign had already raised more than $20,000.
