The fans hate it, the players hate it, and now we find out the referees hate it too – I’m talking about the rule against excessive celebrations for touchdowns in the National Football League.
The rule and the subsequent penalties we’ve seen in the league is a big reason why the NFL also has the moniker of the No Fun League.
But to find out the men and women who have to penalize players for their touchdown celebrations feel the same as we do is welcome news.
The head of the football officials said they don’t like having to watch for holding, illegal blocks and other penalties on an 80-yard touchdown run and then have to watch for the celebration. Is it excessive, vulgar, or delaying the game?
They don’t want to play fun police after some of the most exciting plays in the game.
What would they like to see? The league just fine players in the days after a game for something they find excessive, rather than have the refs have to rule in the instant.
That seems reasonable but, the NFL is anything but reasonable – so, the fun police will stay with new guidelines in 2017.
