Regina council expected to finalize reopened budget

It’s take two for Regina city council as it must again finalize its budget in light of a funding shortfall.

Council has had a week to digest what city administration proposed to make up the money. A 2.5 per cent property tax hike is on the table, along with changes to transit and garbage pickup, various program cancellations and the closure of several facilities, including the Leslie Lawn Bowling Greens.

Last week, council listened to more than a dozen delegations speak out about administration’s proposals. Dozens turned up, many of whom were lawn bowlers, and urged council not to close the greens.

The city found itself in a financial hole after the provincial budget was unveiled, creating a gap in 2017 of $10.3 million. The finance minister has recommended the city use its reserves. Mayor Michael Fougere has been against that idea and has indicated that’s not the intent of reserves.

Council is expected to make hard decisions in its reopened budget.
