Riders begin mini-camp in Florida with Vince Young in tow

The Roughriders kicked off mini-camp at Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach Florida Tuesday morning, with all eyes on Vince Young.

The starting quarterback for the green and white is still very much a question mark. Young, of course, is in the mix, but the Riders also acquired the services of veteran CFL quarterback Kevin Glenn in the off-season and have several young quarterbacks including Brandon Bridge who could challenge for the spot.

Young joined the club in the March after much speculation. The 34-year-old former NFLer retired from football in 2014.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a comeback — I’d just say it’s an opportunity because the fact is, you know, I love the game of football and it’s kind of hard to sit on the couch and not be able to be out there playing,” he said at the time of his signing.

Postmedia’s Murray McCormick told the Green Zone Tuesday that Young was looking a little rusty, but eventually settled in.

“He throws a nice ball, I remember reading there was some knocks against his throwing motion but he made a really nice catch, a long-bomb to this guy, kind of dropped it right in the bucket,” McCormick said.

McCormick said Young was “one of the biggest quarterbacks he’s ever seen” and was impressed by how well he could move.

However, he noted Young still needs to get used to Canadian football, such as having a wider field, and learn the playbook.

Over the next few days, Young will be working with the Riders coaching staff, other quarterbacks and players for the first time since his signing.

McCormick said he fully expects Glenn to be the opening day starter.

The Riders also added 22 players to their roster who will work to earn their invitation to main camp in Saskatoon next month.

Mini-camp is expected to wrap up on Thursday.
