Sask. public schools disappointed in government's response

Public Schools of Saskatchewan are not happy with Brad Wall’s response to a court ruling about Catholic schools receiving provincial funding for non-Catholic students.

A judge ruled it was unconstitutional for the schools to receive the government funding. The ruling will take place in June 2018.

Brad Wall posted on social media Monday, voicing his concern with the ruling.

Other members of the government have also voiced their displeasure with the ruling.

In a news release Tuesday, Public Schools of Saskatchewan said they are disappointed with the government’s response to the ruling.

The group said the government has chosen to ignore the fact that funding non-Catholic students in Catholic schools violated Canada’s constitution.

Public Schools of Saskatchewan said attendance by non-Catholics in the schools is a fairly recent phenomenon and has been asking the government since the 1990s to obtain authoritative guidance on the Constitutional perimeters around the mandates of public and separate school boards across the province.

The group stated, “it’s unfair for to blame either public schools or the Court for the steps that will be needed to abide by Canada’s Constitution.”

It said, “any disruption caused by the movement of non-Catholics from separate schools is a product of the unilateral (and recent) decision of Catholic schools to admit those students.”
